If it is something that you feel you must replace then you need to insure it. If you live on your boat it is absolutely necessary that it be insured. Who would want to lose their home?

Also most boats are financed in the beginning. The lending company will insist on insurance in those cases just as they would with a house or a car. This is not unreasonable; they have as much to lose in the financial sense as you do if anything happens to the boat.

Some areas are more dangerous than others for boaters. While some of those areas are famous or infamous 'the Bermuda Triangle' and the Dardanelles others are less well known but can be just as dangerous.

Cape Disappointment in Washington State is one of the most dangerous areas on the seas when the conditions are right (or wrong). You need to be just as prepared when you off the Pacific coast of Washington and have your boat insurance in order as you do when you are sailing from Bermuda to Florida.

While I contemplate the last half of my life; (I am getting close to that turning point) I must make some decisions as to what I want to do with my leisure years. I have many thoughts in mind but one of those options that keep coming to mind is sailing the world.

All of us need to plan for what we want. If I choose to go sailing I will need several things of those things that I will need if I do choose a boat insurance is the top of that list. I might wind up in a cabin by the woods or on a beach in the South Pacific, I am by nature a solitary person.

If that is the case I will happily spend my time sipping iced tea and spoiling my grandchildren. If I am on a boat I think I will see the Sargasso Sea and sail around the world and across the equator.

About the Author: John Edwardson has been a keen sailor for many years. However, it can be a daunting task to those who have not yet experienced buying a fishing boat.

To make the activity easier for the first timers, here is a list of tips that they can use when choosing an ideal fishing boat.

1. It is important to consider the purpose of the fishing boat.

Buying a fishing boat has only one purpose: to be used in fishing. However, before choosing the perfect fishing boat, it is important to consider also the other purposes.

First, the place where the fishing boat will be used should be taken into account. Will it be in the ocean or in other bodies of water like lakes?

Second, the time of the day it will be used. Will it be for day trips or for overnight fishing activities?

If the fishing boat will be used for ocean cruising and overnight stays, it would be better to buy a fishing boat that has a hull. This is specifically designed for rough waters. This design is meant to ride with the waves, hence, providing more comfort to anglers while on board.

2. The budget

When buying a fishing boat, it is important to know if the buyer can afford to acquire a boat. Fishing boats, or any boat for that matter, can be very expensive. Hence, the buyer should know how far his budget would go as far as fishing boat prices are concerned.

3. The warranties

It is extremely important to know if the fishing boat has a warranty. It should be analyzed and meticulously scrutinized because not all warranties are created equal.

Hence, it is best to buy a fishing boat from dealers that will provide the necessary services in case their product is found to be defective.

4. The certification

When buying a fishing boat, it is important to take note if it is certified by the "National Marine Manufacturers Association" or the NMMA. This agency guarantees that the certification they give to every boat manufacturer is a guarantee that the fishing boat had passed the agency's standard of excellence.

The bottom line is that, people should do more than just look around when choosing the ideal fishing boat. They should learn how to look for the important details in order to ensure that the boat they have acquired is definitely worth their money.

About The Author:
Travis Clemens is a life time fisherman and he knows the ins and outs of gettinem on the hook! Features like catering, destinations, live music, or a DJ are available on these larger boats.

These inspected passenger charter boats, are required to adhere to strict rules and regulations stated by the Coast Guard. Fees are based on the size, operating requirements, and extra features you want with the package, this includes any alcoholic beverages you wish you and your party to consume.

Boat charters can offer a wide variety of different aspects to your chartering experience. Provided, however that youve insured your houseboat properly. Otherwise, you could lose your lifes savings and in the worse case scenario, and be forced to file for bankruptcy.

In the marine insurance industry, houseboats are categorized together with jet boats, ski boats, sailboats, cabin cruisers and party boats as a pleasure boat. For this reason, this kind of coverage is not generally handled by regular insurance companies. You should carefully shop for underwriters who specifically handle these policies.

The first houseboat insurance tenet you must follow is to find a reliable insurer wholl service your needs. Conduct the search both ways.

Word of mouth Ask boating friends for insurance recommendations.

Conduct research on the recommended insurance carriers, the company in-charge of providing you coverage.

The following facts (as provided by the Insurance Information Institute) about your houseboat, such as horsepower, size and age of your boat, the type of craft and where it is used (i.e. moored in a river or hurricane prone area), determines coverage and premium you will pay for your houseboat.

Once thats done, you can now carefully consider which of these policy clauses can help maximize your coverage and accurately answer your particular needs.

Hull and Machinery Clause

Because your houseboat is placed in the same pleasure boat category as a cabin cruiser, certain rates, coverage, restrictions, and terms will be similar.

Still, there are differences. The function of a houseboat is different from a cabin cruiser. The construction of a houseboat reflects this. They are normally flat-bottomed and designed to navigate slowly through the waters.

Many houseboats are bulkier, since they come equipped with bigger sleeping & living areas, full galley, and enclosed head. A race boat or cabin cruiser is smaller, more seaworthy, and easy to maneuver and built for speed.

Liability and Medical Payments to Others

Pays for bodily injury or property damage you are liable for.

Physical Damage Coverage

Pays for the damage your boat, motor, and trailer sustain.

Uninsured Watercraft Coverage

Pays for personal injury damages you are entitled to recover from the owner or operator who have not insured their vessel.

Medical Payments For The Insured

Covers you and your familys medical fees, if you sustain accidental boating injuries.

Towing and Assistance

This coverage pays for the expenses you incur when you request a towing service to deliver the fuels and replacements parts, or fix your engine.

Additional Living Expense

Youre reimbursed for expenses incurred by living in a hotel, because your boat had to be repaired.

Be a responsible houseboat owner. To help you protect your legal rights and be aware of some of the common issues Noble Marine have produced this guide to buying a boat.

Please note that we have only addressed the legal aspects of the subject and advise that you should also satisfy yourself that the boat is seaworthy before you consider buying.
Looking for a boat?

The Noble Marine boats for sale database has over 3000 boats for sale. Each boat has a desciption and photos of the boat so you can look around before you contact the seller.
Wondering what boat to buy?

In addition to this boat and dinghy buyers guide you may wish to make use of our dinghy database or interactive boat finder where you can compare statistics of over 300 classes and view suggestions on similar classes to the type you are interested in.

Unlike a car there isn't a legal registration document tracking the ownership, in fact unless you want to take your boat abroad, you are not required to register your boat at all and many people don't, so checking that the person selling the boat actually owns the boat and that there are no outstanding loans secured on the boat can be difficult.

Before you consider buying a boat you should visit www.stolenboats.org.uk to see if the boat for sale, or a similar one, has been reported stolen. If a boat is not listed on the site it doesn't mean that it is not stolen.

If you buy privately, you won't be protected legally if the craft has a hidden history or faults. It's up to you to ask the right questions and to satisfy yourself that the boat is in good condition before you buy.

Buying a used boat is essentially a case of 'Buyer Beware'. The onus is on you to make sure the craft is sound, it's a good idea to get an qualified marine surveyor or boat builder to give the craft a thorough inspection.

When viewing a boat you should satisfy yourself that the vendor is knowledgeable about the boat and has a legitimate reason for the sale. Ask yourself whether the price is similar to other boats on the market - if a deal looks too good to be true it probably is. You should always arrange to view the boat at the seller's home address and never in a car park or other public location.

It is important to check whether the boat has been involved in any accidents or has any large repairs carried out. Most repairs will be guaranteed for 12 months so it is worth finding out the date of the repair and the repairers details in case of any future problems.

Once you are satisfied that the seller is genuine and have agreed an acceptable price you will need to arrange to make payment for the boat. This is usually carried out by bankers draft or a cash payment can be made. Occasionally the seller may be happy to accept another method of payment but you should be willing to use whichever method they suggest.

The only legal terms that cover a private sale contract are:
the seller must have the right to sell the craft
the craft should not be misrepresented
it should match its description

When the sale is complete you should always draw up a buyers contract so that each party can sign and keep a copy. This will act as your purchase receipt and will prove that you are the new owner of the boat.

Noble Marine have prepared a sample buyers contract for use in private boat sales. It is always important to keep the purchase receipt and the previous owners details - you may need to prove ownership or contact the previous seller in the future.

If the vessel was home built or if you are considering buying outside the EEA, you will also need to be aware of the Recreational Craft Directive requirements.

The VAT status of a second hand yacht is also important, as your vessel needs to have VAT paid status to be allowed free transit throughout the EU.

Useful Links:
http://www.stolenboats.org.uk
http://www.noblemarine.co.uk/boatsforsale.php3
http://www.noblemarine.co.uk/dinghydatabase.php3
http://www.noblemarine.co.uk/boatfinder.php3
http://www.noblemarine.co.uk/buyingaboat.php3?section=contract

Patrick Altoft is an insurance expert with Noble Marine - a specialist insurance broker providing boat insurance for most types of pleasure craft. Roberts

When searching for boat insurance, you may be overwhelmed when you find that there are many different types of boat insurance policies available. In general, insurance companies only offer one general watercraft liability coverage policy; some others may offer additional coverage that you are able to purchase. If you have financed your dreamboat, the lender probably requires you to obtain specific coverage. There are many different types of coverage available that you can add, as an addition to your standard policy.

The standard policy, the watercraft liability insurance coverage, is required by law in most states. This insurance policy provides coverage in the event that damage occurs to a person or property as a result of actions taken on your boat. This is true whether or not it is during transportation or actually on the water. This is a law requirement in having this type of liability coverage, and each area will have its own requirements as to how much you will need. It is wise to consult with an insurance agent to find out what is necessary to meet the requirement of the law.

It is possible that medical payment coverage may be required in your area. This type of coverage pays for the medical expenses, up to a specified amount, for you and any passenger on your boat that result in an accident covered by the policy. As a suggestion, regardless of whether this insurance is required or not, it would be wise to consider it. Medical expenses as a result of an accident can become extremely high.

Another additional type of coverage to the standard liability coverage is the wreck removal and pollution coverage. This should also be strongly considered. If your boat sinks or is involved in an accident for any reason, you are required to remove it at once in accordance with the law. If oil or gas leaks into the water as a result of an accident, you will be fined. The wreck removal and pollution coverage provides coverage for this type of incident, without the coverage you will be required to pay for the removal and fines out of your own pocket.

Just like in automobile coverage, you should definitely insure yourself against uninsured boats as well. This works in the same manner as uninsured motorist insurance your automobiles. If another boater, who does not have any type of insurance or enough coverage, collides with your boat on the water, this coverage will pay for the replacement of your boat and any needed repairs.

Most all insurance policies you purchase should cover the boat, motor, and trailer used to transport your boat. Liability coverage is not the only type of coverage that you will likely need in many cases. Make sure that you protect your boat, optional coverage that includes theft, vandalism, losses caused by storms, fire, sinking, capsizing, stranding, and collision. Speak to your insurance agent and find out what type of insurance is required by your area and the types of coverage they can offer you.

Ethan K. Roberts

At first glance financing a boat is a terrifying task. Most bankers approve or disapprove boat loans in less than an hour; they enjoy offering instant gratification on loans. If the lender has an Internet web site, they can often make a decision in minutes, 24 hours per day, and seven days a week. You simply just have to fill out a form, click the submit button, and you should know in a very short amount of time the answer.

When going about the task of selecting the proper lender, make sure they have a specialty in boat loans. This is particularly important when choosing to buy a used boat, if they are specialized in boat loans they will know the laws pertaining to boats and liens. Simply put, a knowledgeable lender can save you the trouble of buying a boat that does not have a clear title that may end up costing you literally thousands of dollars to pay off just to clear it.

Loan officers that specialize in boat loans will also have knowledge about how to add value and subtract for options or damage to the boat. Contact various lenders and shop around for the best terms. You should compare the various interest rates, down payment, and terms of their loan. Keep in mind the smaller the payment, the longer the loan will last. It is advisable to obtain a shorter loan term if you can afford higher payments. Shorter loan terms, in general, cost less than longer.

Typically, the standard down payment on a boat is about 20 percent. There are some situations where a lender may require more as a down payment; several things will determine the amount of down payment, such as credit history and amount of the loan. On the subject of credit, you should prior to applying for a loan, check your own credit history, if you notice any errors or outdated information it is important that you get them corrected before you apply. Prospective lenders will always check your credit prior to approving a boat loan.

There are other factors a lender will very likely consider when determining your eligibility for a loan. These factors include your salary, ratio of the installment debt to that of your income, job stability, and your disposable income. The total debt you incur monthly to income ratio cannot exceed more than 30 percent of your gross income, if it does it is likely you will not be approved for a loan. If this occurs, you should consider waiting until you have relieved yourself of some debt and apply again.

When you are considering how much money you should apply for, keep in mind any additional items that are not included in the purchase price. Add the costs for these into the price of the boat, as well as extended service contracts with the dealer for the engine and drive, do not forget insurance as well. These are all things to consider when applying for a boat loan.

Ethan K. Roberts writes on a variety of topics not limited to boat loans. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the collection of designs available is immense.

In years gone by, choosing a boat design to build was limited to what you could get your hands on through local boat yards or designers. With the Internet, the whole world plus a huge archive of older designs is now at your finger tips.

No longer do you have to spend $20 to see small plans so you could decide if it was what you truly wanted to build. These days, a few hours on the Net, and you have probably more information than you need. As a matter of fact, you could end up with information overload.

My best advice is first, decide on the basic concept. Do you want a small day sailer, ocean going mono hull, live aboard catamaran or car topper. Is your family truly interested in going boating with you, or are you just assuming? Ask yourself a lot of questions first.

My first boat was a 6ft dinghy I built while still at school. This was built out of cedar so it was really light, and I could pull it behind my bicycle on its own trailer. This was used for a number of years on the river near my home.

My last boat was a 31 ft ocean going yacht. I had this moored over 100 miles from my home. In retrospect, I got far more use and more fun from my 6 ft dinghy. This backs up my thoughts at the start. Do some serious thinking before making your choice of what to build.

Remember, all you need is some basic woodworking tools, some experience and some patience. The building of your own boat is a challenge, but if you meet it, the reward is the deep satisfaction of a self-made life afloat.

Staff writer at http://build-20-boats.info Boat building site strictly for enthusiasts, with informative articles updated regularly

Copyright Peter Frank - http://build-20-boats.info/self-build-boats.php
Hotlib.com - Huge collection of free articles and free reports at Hotlib.com

A Guide To The Oxford And Cambridge University Boat Race

By: John Rivers

I have been fascinated with the annual Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge University for as long as I can remember. I didnt attend any of these top two British Universities, nor do I have an avid enthusiasm for rowing but this traditional race of the two boats over exactly 4 miles and 374 yards still holds a fascination for me. I am not alone as the televised event is broadcast, from the historic River Thames, to hundreds of countries and has an audience of millions. The idea for the boat race between these paragons of academia was dreamt up by two students, both named Charles, funnily enough. Charles Merivale was at Cambridge University and Charles Wordsworth was at Oxford.

Cambridge issued their challenge to Oxford on March 12th 1829. Ever since then, it has been a tradition for the loser of a years race to challenge the other boat to a rematch the following year.

On 10th June 1829, thousands of enthusiastic people descended on the small town of Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. They were there to witness the first ever staging of the Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridges best rowing teams. In a rather embarrassing turn of events the race had to be stopped shortly after both boats had begun to be rowed. It was restarted and Oxford was the winner of the first boat race against Cambridge.

One thing that I didnt realise about the Boat Race until fairly recently was that the members of both crews do not get any special dispensation as far as their studies go. If they cant keep up with their academic commitments then the students must resign from that years boat squad.

The Boat Race is on a Sunday in March or April and the main event is preceded by a competition between Isis and Goldie. These are the reserve boats for Oxford and Cambridge in that order. About half an hour later the Blue Boats, as the first teams of each University are known, takes place. Some of them are beyond our control, but others are a matter of personal choice. With a little patience and research, one can improve the rate to a good degree and save a good deal of money in the long run.

Basic improvements to your boat insurance rate are not all that hard to accomplish. The main thing you need is patience. All good things to those who wait as the old saying goes. If waiting is not a problem then there is no reason why you should not be able to get a decent boat insurance quote.

First you should make a good choice on boats. Just like a car, the sportier a boat is the more expensive the insurance will be. For basic purposes you should make every attempt to choose a boat that is as safe as possible. This means that extreme power, giant engines, and lightweight speed increasing designs should be avoided. A pleasure craft is going to make an insurance company far less nervous than that of a true speed demon that will cut the water and make old ladies faint in the wake. There are plenty of nice boats on the market that have all the amenities and nominal speed capabilities that will not make your agent cringe.

Boat value is another factor. If the boat that you choose has an extreme value that you need to insure then you can count on a high insurance quote. To guard against this, make an informed choice when buying a boat. Check several different sellers to make sure that you are getting the best deal possible. This will in effect make your insurance rate go down considerably as the company will have less to cover in the case of an accident or theft.

Being safe is another matter. Most insurance agencies will offer discounts to clients who will take and complete a boating safety course. This will make you a better boater and decrease the chances that you will make a fatal error or judgement call that will end up costing the insurance company lots of money. This will also work to protect you on several levels. Not only will you and the people with you be in better hands with someone who has proper training, you will also have piece of mind that you will not make a poor judgement call at a crucial moment that could cause the loss of your craft. Insurance companies are not the only ones who have something to lose.

Finally, you should contact the company that handles you car and house insurance. Most times, companies will offer deep discounts to those who use them for all of their insurance needs. This will help to protect everyone involved and it may simplify things from a billing standpoint as well. The end result will be more money saved and less complication when time for the payments to be made.

About the Author: Mansi aggarwal recommends that you visit http://www.independent.ws/2006/01/get_an_instant_.html for more information on instant boat insurance quote.
Source: www.isnare.com

4 Tips For Buying The Perfect Fishing Boat

By: Dana Goldberg

The sun is about to rise and the weather is crisp. You pack your tackle box, grab your pole and buy some worms. You make your way to the fishing dock dreaming you had the perfect fishing boat so you were landlocked no more. Now that dream can become reality with these 4 easy tips for finding and purchasing the perfect fishing boat!

Have a clear understanding of the purpose of the fishing boat. Obviously the boat is going to be used for fishing, but is it going to be used on oceans or in lakes? For day time trips or overnight stays? If you play to stay in your boat overnight, be sure to choose a boat with a hull which will allow you to ride the waves much better than a boat without one.

Make sure to have a clear understanding of your budget. Boats are very expensive items. You should be well acquainted with your finances before you take on the extra burden of a boat purchase. Boats with hulls for overnight stays and rough waters are obviously more expensive than small boats for small lakes. Know your limitations.

Read and understand the warranties fully before making a purchase. A warranty can be your best friend. Make sure the dealer you buy the boat from offers you the proper coverage in case there is any defect or problem with your boat. You don't want to end up having to pay huge amounts to fix your boat because you forgot to check out the warranties!

Make sure the boat has proper certification .The NMMA, or the National Marine Manufacturer's Association is an organization that tests boats that are manufactured by different companies. They only certify those boats that pass their rigorous testing. Any boat certified by the NMMA is one that you would feel safe owning.

Also, just like cars, boats must be registered. Be prepared to register your boat just like your vehicle (i.e. paying money). On top of that expense, you must now stock your boat with life jackets, brand new fishing gear, food and a cooler so you can get fishing!

About The Author:
Dana Goldberg is the owner of The Boats Blog.
